Oral Biopsies

If you are concerned about a change in the soft tissue of your mouth — such as your lips, tongue, gums, or hard or soft palate — Dr. Jason A. Dunville and Dr. Hayley Mathie perform oral biopsies in Jefferson City, MO, to identify the issue and plan the best way to address it.

What Is an Oral Biopsy?

An oral biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of tissue is removed from an area of concern inside your mouth. The tissue sample is sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination to determine whether the cells are benign, precancerous or cancerous. Biopsies are an important diagnostic tool that provide definitive answers about oral lesions and abnormalities.

When Is an Oral Biopsy Recommended?

  • Persistent sores or ulcers that do not heal within two weeks
  • Unusual lumps, bumps or thickened tissue
  • White or red patches on the gums, tongue or lining of the mouth
  • Abnormalities detected during an oral cancer screening
  • Unexplained numbness, pain or tenderness in the mouth

The Biopsy Process

Oral biopsies are typically performed in our office with local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The procedure is quick, and most patients experience only minor discomfort afterward. Results are usually available within one to two weeks, at which point our dentists will discuss the findings with you and recommend any necessary follow-up treatment.
